With a dozen albums under his belt, Chris Smither qualifies as a veteran of the music
industry. His elegant lyrics are arranged simply, with mostly just his own masterful finger-
picking and foot-tapping to accompany him. His music qualifies as folk, but the blues
influences are undeniable.
His first album, I'm A Stranger Too!, was released in 1970. His songs have been covered by
the likes of Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Diana Krall. His recent album, Leave The
Light On, includes songs by Peter Case, Bob Dylan and Mississippi John Hurt, alongside
original, topical material that hearkens back to Smither's '60s folk roots, as well as his
stunning arrangements of traditional songs.
Smither's latest release, Time Stands Still is just the eleventh studio album of a career that
now spans over four decades. Time Stands Still is both pensive and visceral – an album
whose songs alternately ponder life’s mysteries in some moments, and let them lie
undisturbed in others. It features eight new original compositions and a song apiece from
Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, and 1920s country-blues songster Frank Hutchison.

From the bright lights of the Grand Ol' Opry to the UK's Glastonbury
Festival, to regular appearances on A Prairie Home Companion and
festival stages worldwide, the Hot Club of Cowtown has ascended from
its unlikely beginnings in NYC's East Village a decade ago to become
the premier ambassador of hot jazz and Western swing through sheer
tenacity, virtuosity and the unstoppable power of their breathtaking
live show.
The Hot Club of Cowtown formed in 1996 as a hot jazz/western swing
group. The group consists of Elana James nee Fremerman (Vocals,
Violin), Whit Smith (Vocals, Guitar), and Jake Erwin (Vocals, Upright
Bass).

The Hot Club’s first album, 1998’s Swingin’ Stampede, was a collection of covers of classic tunes, including two written by Bob
Wills, a major influence on the band. Their 1999 follow-up album, Tall Tales, showcased the songwriting ability of both Smith
and Fremerman, with many original songs, including “Forget-Me-Nots” and “That Secret of Mine”, both by Fremerman, and “It
Stops With Me”, by Smith, mixed with covers ranging from Rodgers and Hart’s “You Took Advantage of Me” to Aerosmith’s
“Chip Away the Stone”. Further albums would continue the same formula of classic western swing and hot jazz, along with
originals in the same style.

Whether Guy Davis is appearing on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” or nationally syndicated radio programs
such as Garrison Keillor’s, “A Prairie Home Campanion”, “Mountain Stage” or David Dye’s,“World Café”., in
front of 15,000 people on the Main Stage of a major festival, or teaching an intimate gathering of students at a
Music Camp, Guy feels the instinctive desire to give each listener his ‘all’.
His ‘all’ is the Blues.
The routes, and roots, of his blues are as diverse as the music form itself. It can be soulful, moaning out a people’
s cry, or playful and bouncy as a hay-ride.
He's a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a bluesman. The blues
permeates every corner of Davis' creativity.
Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving the traditions of acoustic blues and bringing them to
as many ears as possible through the material of the great blues masters, African American stories, and his own
original songs, stories and performance pieces.
His influences are as varied as the days. Musically, he enjoyed such great blues musicians as Blind Willie McTell
(and his way of story telling), Skip James, Manse Lipscomb, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton, and Buddy
Guy, among others. It was through Taj Mahal that he found his way to the old time blues. He also loved such
diverse musicians as Fats Waller and Harry Belafonte.
Livingston Taylor - Aug 18 @ 7:30
|
Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, beginning a forty-year career that
has encompassed performance, songwriting and teaching. Born in Boston and raised in North
Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate and
Hugh. Livingston recorded his first record at 18 and has continued to create well-crafted,
introspective and original songs that have earned him listeners worldwide.
From top-forty hits “I Will Be in Love with You” and “I’ll Come Running”, to “I Can Dream of You”
and “Boatman” both recorded by his brother James, Livingston’s creative output has continued
unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a
range of musical genres—folk, pop, gospel, jazz—and from upbeat storytelling to touching ballads.

- "An unrepentant romantic, with a razor-sharp mind, a biting sense of
humor, and a quirky view of the world." ~ Wood and Steel Magazine
- "One of the most consistently entertaining, tasteful, and intelligent of
songsmiths..." ~ Dirty Linen Magazine
- "The Ultimate Crowd pleaser...." ~ Performing Songwriter Magazine
- "Liv Taylor is a must-see in concert; the man knows how to entertain!"
Livingston has never stopped performing since those early coffeehouse days, touring with major artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffet and
Jethro Tull, and he maintains a busy concert schedule of over eighty shows a year. He is a natural performer, peppering his shows with personal
stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth that connect him to his fans. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and
fans might just as often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway.
As a full professor at Berklee College of Music since 1989, Livingston shares his experiences and knowledge of professional touring with young
artists, just beginning to hone their skills. His course, Stage Performance (I and II) is one of the most popular at the College, and it gives him the
ideal forum in which to impart the lessons learned through his own career to a new generation of musicians. His book, Stage Performance, is
drawn from those classes will be available this fall.
